Today, while having a typical text discussion with Nora, my phone autocorrected “Hermione” to “Germaine.” So there’s Germaine.
I’m going to try to post a doodle or sample of work here every day with a little note about my day.
This year for my birthday resolution I decided to try to be less of a slave to objects. I have a tiny apartment and too much stuff. Nelly is doing a semester abroad in Taiwan, and we were talking about the act of paring down. I find it very hard to seperate the emotional aspect of getting rid of things (see To Have and Hold).
But Nelly told me: “Think about how happy getting a new used book makes you, and how donating your old books can give someone else that happiness!”
So I went through my books and did a big purge and then took them to The Strand to sell. I wandered back through the store, contemplating MORE books I might buy with my new store credit, to fill up my apartment yet again. There was a big display devoted to “culinary lifestyle” books, and I thought about how Relish will likely be out on displays like that in only a few months. After feeling a bit overwhelmed earlier that day about the prospect of my hectic book tour, it was a nice thought to imagine the book being picked up and it giving someone happiness at finding it.
