Today I thought I’d take a an hour or so out of my workday to try to teach myself how to use a basic 3D modeler. This was an attempt to staunch my anxiety about doing a fictional comic I’ve had kicking around for a while. I’m pretty used to having a model on hand for a lot of the comics I do (a serious benefit of being a primarily autobiographical comic artist), so I thought making myself a 3D model of my fictional story’s main character would help me feel like I could stay “on model” while drawing.
Hey guess what so I did that for like five hours.
I used Sculptris, which is free and actually pretty mesmerizingly fun— like sculpting with clay only WAY MORE FRUSTRATING AND SLOW BECAUSE MY COMPUTER IS MEGA OLD. 3D art has never made sense in my 2D brain, so it was a real challenge for me. I didn’t get to painting it yet (that might be beyond my computer’s wherewithall), but I think I did fairly well in getting my model to resemble my drawing a bit. One step closer to that fictional GN! I should probably finish the script… Anyway, I am insanely proud of myself for learning a new art skill and tech program. Even if it did make me look like this a lot.
