Six months or so ago, when I was asked to be in the wedding of a couple very dear friends of mine, I had already conscripted the other bridesmaids to join me in making a totally hilarious present for the bride and groom.
Taylor (along with her lil’ sis, Chelsea) is the closest thing I have to a sibling, having grown up together when our parents were dating. Taylor has adored the muppets nearly since birth, so when she met Andrew, a gangly Aussie muppet himself, of course it was true love.
So naturally, the two of them deserved a present so ridiculous as to redirect some of my crazy artist focus for half a year, recruiting family members, friends, and an incredible puppet-crafter, Jamie Bressler. It also involved a cross-country flight with puppets during my book tour, hilarious public puppeteering by bridesmaid and friend puppet wranglers, and lots of love, to create this epic “Mupptuals” project.
We sprung it on them at the rehearsal dinner, to much shock and amazement (it might surprise you to know that a confessional autobio comic artist finds secret keeping nearly impossible, but everyone kept a lid on things!). I was proud to be a part of making this childhood dream come true, and just as pleased to watch that dream get wildly upstaged by the dream of a loving, happy wedding the following day.
So with love (and my gratitude!) from Chelsea, Briana, Toria and me, and all of the wedding party and many friends, I present, “MUPPTUALS.”
